Observing Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

How to Make the Most Out of National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

October is simultaneously a national observance for both depression and mental health screening. For many, these celebrations don’t mean more than several reminders on social media or the news about the topic. However, these observances are something that every single one of us can and must participate in.

But how do you do this? And more importantly, how do you make the most out of these observances?

As your trusted psychiatry clinic in Houston Texas & Surprise, Arizona, we at Sparks Psychiatry are more than happy to share to you some of the ways you can do so. Here is our list of suggestions:

  • Educate yourself about the topic
Making a change begins with educating ourselves. Start with reading and researching the topic, consulting mental health professionals, and attending seminars.
  • Check your innate biases
We all have biases but some of them can be more harmful than others, especially when they prevent us from being compassionate. You may think that consulting a psychiatrist in Houston Texas & Surprise, Arizona, for instance, means someone is suffering from a debilitating mental illness when the truth is, seeking help is for everyone.
  • Spread awareness
Whether through social media or talking with your friends and family personally about the topic, you can do your share by sounding the alarm. Also, by being vocal about the topic, you’re being silently supportive of friends or peers who may be on depression medication but chose to keep it a secret.
  • Check on your loved ones
Mental health issues can affect anyone, even your family members or friends. Take the time to talk to them and make sure to keep an open mind.

If you do have a loved one struggling with depression and other mental health issues, make them feel supported by lending an ear or even accompanying them to their mental health clinic for appointments.
